Labor Day sales include up to 20 percent off Sonos speakers
Sonos has a number of Labor Day sales on speakers and bundles right now that discount gear by up to 20 percent. The most notable deal is for the Era 100 smart speaker, which has been discounted to $200, down from $250. The Era 100 made our list of the best smart speakers, and for good reason. This is a speaker designed, first and foremost, for audio quality. It includes two tweeters, where most smart speakers have one, and an extra-large woofer. All of that results in impressive bass, huge volume and great high-end clarity.
It’s also, of course, a smart speaker. The built-in microphones help to optimize the output based on where the speaker has been placed. It works with many smart assistants for voice control, including Alexa or the company’s proprietary assistant. It doesn’t work with Google Assistant, which could be a dealbreaker for some.
There’s a USB-C line-in and Bluetooth for multi-speaker setups. As a matter of fact, you can hodgepodge a decent surround sound home theater system by pairing two of these together with a soundbar.
This is a sitewide sale, so the Era 100 is far from the only available deal. The Move 2 portable speaker has been discounted to $360 from $450 and the Beam 2 soundbar is on sale for $400 instead of $500. The company’s impressive Ace headphones have also been discounted to $400 from $450.
The sale even applies to bundles, for those looking for a complete setup. A combo featuring both the Era 100 and the Move 2 is available for $578, which is a savings of $120.

HP secures up to $50 million in CHIPS Act funding to expand an Oregon facility
HP is the latest recipient of CHIPS and Science Act funding. The Biden-Harris Administration said on Tuesday that the Department of Commerce has agreed to preliminary terms with the company to funnel up to $50 million into modernizing the company’s Oregon-based plant. The expansion of HP’s “lab-to-fab” facility, which combines R&D with chip manufacturing, is expected to create over 250 jobs.
Once finalized, HP’s funding would support the development of chips for life sciences lab equipment. This includes devices used for drug discovery, single-cell research and cell line development. HP says the expansion will also advance tech built for microfluidics, the study of the behavior and control of fluid on a microscopic scale. “Microfluidics has the potential to drive revolutionary changes across industries, delivering speed, efficiency, and precision, to help pave the way for the next generation of innovation in life sciences and technology,” HP’s President and CEO Enrique Lores wrote in a Department of Commerce press release.
The proposed $50 million would support the expansion and modernization of HP’s existing plant in Corvallis, OR, around 80 miles south of Portland. In addition to manufacturing silicon, the plant is one of the company’s three global R&D centers. The 80,000-square-foot plant has incubated 39 startups, including 20 spun off from Oregon State University faculty and students. The company has academic partnerships with Portland Community College on training and recruitment programs.
The proposed $50 million funding is through a preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT). The non-binding agreement is “conditional on the achievement of certain milestones.” Having completed a merit review of HP’s application, the Department of Commerce will begin due diligence on HP’s proposed projects before the agency negotiates or refines its final funding terms.
The $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act, signed by President Biden in 2022, directs funding to incentivize semiconductor companies to manufacture in America, boosting America’s ability to compete with China while generating job growth. It includes $39 billion in subsidies for domestic chip manufacturing and $13 billion for workforce training.
Previous recipients include $8.5 billion for Intel, $6.6 billion for TSMC and $6.4 billion for Samsung. In addition, GlobalFoundries received $1.5 billion and Texas Instruments got $1.6 billion to produce legacy chips (less advanced silicon for things like phones, appliances and defense equipment).

The biggest announcements from the August 2024 Nintendo Direct
Nintendo fans have a lot to look forward to, including the company’s new museum, a Donkey Kong theme park expansion coming to the US and, of course, the follow up to the Switch. But everything all boils back down to the games, and we now have a clearer idea of what’s coming to the Switch thanks to a double Nintendo Direct that the company streamed this morning at 10AM ET.
The two-for-one stream ran for around 40 minutes, and was entirely focused on games — the company mentioned before the stream not to expect any news about its next console.
There were several announcements that could change your game plans today: A free update to Balatro brings custom decks to the smash-hit card game. The first decks are crossovers with The Witcher 3, Among Us, Dave the Diver and Vampire Survivors. There was also a surprise Switch release for Pizza Tower, a breakout platformer from last year which is one of the highest-rated games on Steam. Another same-day drop is Castlevania Dominus Collection, which brings together three DS titles — Dawn of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia and Portrait of Ruin — into one title.
Further down the line, Sega will bring Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the first Yakuza game released in 2016, to Nintendo Switch on October 24 — the same day as the quirky dating sim Date Everything. Neva, a platformer we adored at Summer Game Fest, will arrive the week before on October 15. Konami’s delayed Suikoden remaster will now launch on March 6, 2025. Capcom announced another fighting game collection, this one including the Dreamcast classics Power Stone and Power Stone 2 along with some solid 2D fighters including Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro.
There are dozens more announcements to enjoy in the full stream, which is still available on Nintendo’s YouTube channel.
Update, 8/27/24, 1:05PM ET: This story was updated after publishing with details on the games announced at today’s Nintendo Direct.
